INTERVIEW:
Black Bananas and Bunny Jr. Tapes on a recorded line ...

Somewhere around 2010, I met Jennifer Herrema and Kurt Midness of the Black Bananas (former RTX and Royal Trux.) At the time, I was in a band called Crazy Band and we ended up playing a string of shows together in Southern California. Those shows were formative moments for me and Jennifer has since been a major player in the list of people that contributed to the stuff I'm into now.

I called them up on a whim, and we talked about how the recording process has changed for them over the years — and about how first takes are generally the best takes. They have a new record coming 2026 on Fire Records, Jennifer has a show in Japan sometime over the next year, and they have their monthly Dublab show that you can check out here.

Black Bananas is just one of those bands.

If it clicks for you, it's probably because you're really into music. If it doesn't it's probably because you're trying to " figure it out"... which is a total mistake.

Last week, they sent me a sneak peak of their new record and it's all I've been listening to. We'll be debuting an unreleased track from it called "Cutlass Funk" on the upcoming NTS Bunny Jr. Tapes takeover show on July 12th. They will also be DJing at the BJRT 10 Year Anniversary Show at Union Pool — which you should seriously not miss. Catch the sample origin explained and a track teaser at the end of this interview. music is an open edition compilation of various artists.
The purpose of music is to provide a space for sketches, experiments, raw sounds,
works-in-progress, collaborations, open-ended and “unfinished” tracks and songs.

The aim of this project is to bend the boundaries of what we consider a completed work.
No track names are allowed and numbers are assigned in chronological order starting from when a track is received.
The artists listed above were invited to submit and given the guidelines below.

Guidelines / Information
1. all works should be between 30 secs - 10 mins WAV or MP3.
2. you cannot submit something you have already released elsewhere.
3. you can however release something you have already made, something from your archive, something sitting in the hard drive somewhere collecting dust.
4. you are 100% allowed to re-release / rework the track you submit at a later date. you own this track.
5. the deadline is 7 days from when this prompt is received.
